Nick knew from a young age that he wanted to be a tattoo artist, but he couldn’t find anyone willing to train him. So, he attended Penn State University to study the fine arts. In his third year, he took a huge risk; finally being offered the tattoo apprenticeship he always wanted, Nick left Penn State to pursue his true passion.
Nick served a rigorous two-year apprenticeship at under TimmmyTatts at Tattoo Marks (State College, PA), learning primarily traditional style tattooing in the old school way: blood, sweat, and tears. His apprenticeship served not only to teach him the art of tattoo, but to test him on his level of dedication to the craft. When he finished his apprenticeship and entered the world of professional tattooing, there was no doubt that he made the right decision in leaving college.
That dedication is so strong today that Nick doesn’t really have any outside hobbies or interests. His sole passion is his work, which is clearly seen in his art. His greatest influences in the tattoo industry are those he admires for their strong work ethic, like Jeff Gogue, Shige, and Scott Sylvia.
I asked Nick if he felt any changes needed to be made in the tattoo community, and his biggest concern was client education. He finds the current trend for typographical (lettering and words) tattoos to lack creativity, which can be frustrating for such a highly trained artist. He said, “Clients sometimes forget that tattooing is an art form. Words aren’t that original and it’s becoming cliché. A word is a word, no matter who does it.” Imagine hiring the likes of Van Gogh to paint nothing but some lines from a book! Not to mention the fact that your favorite movie quote or book passage probably isn’t as unique an idea as you think. “People see something once and they think it’s original, but that doesn’t mean the artist hasn’t seen it a hundred times.”
