Tim Hendricks is a second-generation artist, taught by his father at a young age. Since the time Tim was old enough to grip a pencil and ride a surfboard, he has been pursuing a life of art and leisure. Tim has been tattooing professionally since 1994 and his Chicano style is known worldwide. During his mid-teens, he got his start by tattooing in the neighborhood he grew up in, tattooing local Latino gang members. His lust for life and his continuing pursuit of knowledge, growth, and travel combined with his background of a lengthy tattoo career have shaped his style of art into something described as unique and diverse. Nowadays, Tim spends most of his time skateboarding and surfing away his days and nights. He is also currently working on a couple of book projects and draws and paints as much as possible. With a perfect amount of tattooing sprinkled upon his luscious life of leisure, he is quite possibly the happiest man he knows. We sit down with Tim and ask him a few questions about his life as a tattoo artist and his artwork, and this is what he had to say. Where were you born?
I was born in Bellflower, California. Tell us a little bit about where you grew up?
I grew up in a town called Fullerton in inland Orange County. I love Fullerton; my Mom still lives in the house I grew up in. The neighborhood was mostly Latino, and even though my father was obviously Mexican, I was light-skinned and got called "guero pelón" 'cause I had no hair. That caused for a number of fights in grade school and junior high. I always wanted to prove that I was just as tough; it was immature. But hey, I was young and dumb.

At what age did you start drawing?
I started drawing as soon as I could pick up a pencil and physically hold it; I always loved to draw. Drawing was in my blood; my father was an art teacher at the jr. college near by and sold paintings on the side.
How was your father an influence in your artistic career?
He taught me everything I know about how to draw and paint. After he died, I went and got jumped in a small gang and went crazy for a minute. After I got some of that out of my system I started painting again, and it just so happened that while my father was alive, he did instructional painting videos for public access cable. I borrowed the tapes from my mom and got to learn all over again from him even after he died. I thought that was pretty cool; it was one of the reasons I chose to be on TV.
Where did you learn how to tattoo? I learned to tattoo in the neighborhood I grew up in and was mostly self-taught in my teen years. In my neighborhood if you could draw well, then you were most likely gonna do a tattoo on someone sooner or later.

When did you start tattooing?
I started tattooing somewhere between 15 and 16, I guess. It was nothing very serious ya know, just poking small cholo designs into skin. My mom threw me out when I was 15. I used tattooing to get things from people, like beer, drugs, and sometimes just simple favors. I took it more seriously around '93-'94 when I was just about to turn 18 and got a hold of a real machine that wasn't homemade. I would still use the same needle 100 times, but at least it wasn't guitar string!
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Nowadays, I get my inspiration from the people I work with, my travels, and the friends and family that are in my life. It used to be that I would use mind-altering substances to get inspired to paint or draw, and I ran it like that for a very long time. I don't even drink anymore, let alone use drugs, so I rely on the places I travel and the people I meet to influence and inspire what I create these days. I take a lot of photos and document my life and what I see-my memory just isn't the same as what it used to be.
