Lango is a legendary tattoo and street artist I interviewed when I was working for Acclaim magazine.
With a constant increasing quantity of new faces showing up every morning, it is currently essential to find new perspectives for whom who hope to unite personal creations and commercial success in the trendy landscape of tattooing.
With nearly twenty years of practice, the Brazilian artist Lango today masters various tools like Guns, brushes, or even spraycans, with a highly recognizable and tasteful style. Without any art school background to orientate his technique, this multi-faceted creative artist now develops his original approach in his San Diego studio, from where he gives acclaim’s readers the opportunity to know a little bit more about his life and views.
I grew up in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, where I started tagging at a very young age and was exposed to the skateboarding culture, punk rock, metal (Sarcofago), and was always hanging around older crowds. I had a few friends that were tattooers and they encouraged me to start tattooing, in spite of my hesitation. I started working at a tattoo shop as a counter person during the day and tattooed people at home.
I use a different approach for each medium, but a lot of times it all clashes together. When I paint with oils or acrylics, I try to stay away from tattoo imagery. When I use water color, I work more with graphic tattoo related themes. My approach to tattooing is either graphic/traditional or very painterly, depending on the subject matter. With graffiti, I prefer letters over characters, but I also stay away from tattoo imagery when painting characters and look for a medieval or experimental character. My style focuses on old traditional and medieval imagery (skulls, dragons, snakes, witches, heraldic lurkers, etc.), and good old bio-mech.
When I started tattooing, it was so hard to find information. It was like a secret world so whenever you learned something like making needles you knew that you learned something fundamental and that you had to master that also. I was lucky that I was accidentally around some of the best tattooers in Rio of that time. Nowadays, you can buy everything from home, and there are numerous TV shows related to tattooing. Thanks to those shows, every middle aged person that works into a tattoo shop brings some kind of wack reference, or sad story that has nothing to do with tattooing and expects to get a sleeve in two hours. What was so fascinating about tattoo was the fact that it was underground. Whoever was heavily tattooed was like a rebel, an outlaw. Now every poser has neck and hand tattoos before getting anything else.

Orochimaru (, Orochimaru) is one of the Konohagakure's three legendary ninja or Sannin. He was the student that everyone believed would become the Fourth Hokage, but his hunger for power led him to commit dark experiments and practice forbidden jutsu. After the Third uncovered the truth, Orochimaru left Konoha and formed the Hidden Sound Village in the Land of Rice. He was responsible for countless immoral experiments and collected many ninja with unique abilities in his numerous hidden bases. He wished more than anything to find the ultimate body and improve himself to the state of a god. He attempted to possess Itachi Uchiha, Kimimaro Kaguya, and Sasuke Uchiha's body, but all of the attempts failed for various reasons, with Sasuke actually reversing the jutsu and possessing Orochimaru's soul. Kimimaro had an illness that prevented Orochimaru from possessing him, and Itachi reversed the jutsu and severed Orochimaru's left arm after which Orochimaru left Akatsuki.
Being one of the Legendary Three Ninjas as well as a former member of Akatsuki, Orochimaru is one of the strongest fighters in the Naruto Universe. The scope of his power is so great that the Third Hokage feared no one alive from Konoha at the time of his invasion could defeat him. Orochimaru was also able to fight on an equal footing with a four-tailed Four Tailed Naruto Uzumaki in Part II while his body was in a weakened condition, and despite the danger Naruto imposed he found the battle highly entertaining. Likewise, even after Sasuke Uchiha's two and a half year training, he proved no match for Orochimaru even when Orochimaru was sick. While he has only displayed a limited amount of techniques, it stands to reason that in his efforts to learn all existing jutsu his array of abilities has become vast. One of the few jutsu he is seen using is the Earth Clone Technique (, Tsuchi Bunshin no Jutsu), which creates a copy of himself out of mud that can attack on his behalf. He is also able to utilize Wind Release: Great Breakthrough (, Fton: Daitoppa), through which he can level a wide area with a powerful gust of wind. In terms of defensive jutsu Orochimaru has created both Summoning: Rashomon (, Kuchiyose: Rashmon) and Triple Rashomon (, Sanj Rashmon), in which he summons a varying number of large demonic gates that are capable of enduring the most intense forms of damage. If need be he can also place a Five Elements Seal (, Gogy Fin; English TV "Five Pronged Seal") on an opponent, sealing off their access to chakra and thus making them useless in battle.
In his quest to gain immortality Orochimaru has made a number of modifications to his body, resulting in his natural form taking on the appearance of a giant white snake composed of many smaller snakes. This form has the advantages of allowing him to stretch any part of his body to great lengths, regenerate any wound inflicted upon him, and otherwise use the snakes that he is composed of for attack. The primary use of the form is with his Living Corpse Reincarnation (, Fushi Tensei; English "Immortality Jutsu"), which allows him to transfer his soul to another's body and extend his life indefinitely. To use this jutsu Orochimaru leaves his former body, revealing his true form. Once doing so he swallows the new body and transports its current inhabitant to a dimension within himself where he absorbs them, thus allowing him to use their body. Orochimaru can only perform this technique once every three years, which is also around the time that his new body begins to reject him and forces him to find a new host. Although he might leave their bodies behind, the souls of those whose bodies he has taken always remain within Orochimaru's subconscious, causing some of their traits to affect the choices he makes. While within another's body Orochimaru uses Vanishing Facial Copy Technique (, Shshagan no Jutsu) to assume his original appearance. This ability also allows him to take the identities of others by forcefully peeling off their face for his own use, killing them in the process.
As a byproduct of his research to gain immortality, Orochimaru developed the Summoning: Impure World Resurrection (, Kuchiyose: Edo Tensei; English "Summoning Jutsu: Reanimation"), which allows him to revive the dead. To perform the technique Orochimaru must sacrifice a living human so that the soul of the deceased person can be tied to the living world. The sacrificed body is then surrounded with dirt and dust that compacts into the shape of the summoned soul's original body. Although the revived retain their original memories and personalities, thus leaving them out of the control of Orochimaru, Orochimaru can suppress their free-wills with his own special seal to force them to do his bidding. The bodies of the resurrected are also able to regenerate any wound, meaning the only way to defeat them is to remove the soul within them.
Orochimaru has an apparent interest in snakes that, in addition to impacting the appearance and composition of his true form, has caused him to learn a number of snake-related abilities. One such ability is being able to summon giant snakes to fight alongside him in battle, made possible by the summoning contract tattooed to his arms. With Hidden Shadow Snake Hand (, Sen'eijashu; Viz "Striking Snake Technique", English TV "Striking Shadow Snakes") and the larger-scale Hidden Shadow Many Snakes Hand (, Sen'eitajashu), Orochimaru can call forth snakes from his sleeves and mouth to attack opponents in large numbers with poisonous bites. Another usage of snakes comes in the form of his Kusanagi Sword: Long Sword of the Heavens (, Kusanagi no Tsurugi: K no Tachi; English TV "The Grass Long Sword"), the Kusanagi of Japanese legend. The sword, kept within a mouth of a snake within his own mouth, is able to extend to great lengths and can be controlled remotely by Orochimaru. Although he is capable of using the sword normally with great proficiency, it is not uncommon for him to wield it without ever removing it from his mouth. In addition, Orochimaru has shown the ability to regurgitate copies of himself from his mouth. His Death Foreseeing Technique (, Shi no kumi no Jutsu), while not directly connected to snakes, allows him to show opponents visions of their own gruesome deaths, making them immobile with fright, causing them great mental stress, and allowing him to kill them at his own pace.

August "Capt." Coleman was born in 1884 near Cincinnati, Ohio. Although Coleman claimed his father was also a tattooist, his name has not surfaced as part of tattoo history. In fact, Paul Rogers was always a bit skeptical about that story. It is of course well known that Coleman settled in Norfolk, VA around 1918 and quickly became a living legend in the tattoo business.

It is unclear who did Coleman's tattooing but some of it was probably done by hand. Many of Coleman's tattoos, which included the large eagle, the flag chest piece, the ship on the stomach, the sun designs on the kneecaps, and the fancy socks design, could be seen on the small statue that was displayed in his shop window in Norfolk. This statue is now part of the Mariner's Museum collection in Newport News, Virginia.
When Coleman set up shop on East Main Street in Norfolk VA, it was one of the more "colorful" streets in town. Norfolk was a major seaport at this time with ships from around the world arriving and departing daily. The street was lined with tattoo shops with plenty of sailors to fill them. Coleman's shop was located near the old Majestic Theatre, later known as the Gaiety Theater, a favorite striptease and burlesque house frequented by sailors.

Coleman's business card stated that he offered cover work, supplies including needles, designs, colors, stencils, and machines. Coleman used this card for many years, but his approach to the supply business was very low key. Coleman seemed to be very sure of his position in the tattoo world, as was noted on his elaborate two-sided business card. The card shows two photos of him and mentions all the magazines that had featured articles on him. He didn't even think it was necessary to mention his address, and simply stated, "Look for Coleman's place on Main Street."
When Norfolk's City Council ruled tattooing illegal in June 1950 by passing Ordinance No. 15,668. Coleman, along with many other tattooists were forced out of the city. Many of the Norfolk tattooists, including Grimshaw and Coleman, moved across the Elizabeth River and set up shops in Portsmouth, Virginia when the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority bulldozed the area.
Coleman's body was found in the Elizabeth River near his home on October 25, 1973. It was thought that he slipped and fell into the river. Coleman invested his tattooing money wisely in the stock market. At the time of his death he had accumulated small fortune, which he left to the Virginia School for the Deaf, the Norfolk United Fund, the Tidewater Lions Club and the St. Mary's Infants Fund.
I am Jewish, a college student, and I'd like a tattoo. Some of my American Jewish friends have tattoos, and I remember seeing plenty of people in Israel with tattoos when I visited. Am I allowed by Jewish law to get a tattoo? If I get a tattoo, can I still be buried in a Jewish cemetery?
Answer: You are interested in getting a tattoo, but you are concerned that it would exclude you from burial in a Jewish cemetery. You are not sure about conflicting things you've heard about the position of Jewish law concerning tattoos.
In general, Jewish law does not permit the intentional defacement of the human body, and this applies to tattoos. Also, after the Holocaust, many Jews are repulsed by the idea of marking their bodies in the way that the Nazis marked the bodies of their victims.
However, I do not know of any rabbi or Jewish cemetery that would refuse to bury a Jew because their body had a tattoo. That would be a terrible violation of the Jewish principle of Kavod Ha-Meit, giving honor to the dead.
The vast majority of Jews in Israel are secular -- non-religious -- in their practice and beliefs. This would explain the tattoos that you saw there. It is no indication of the position of either liberal or orthodox Judaism.
I would also ask you this question: What would you gain by having a permanent tattoo placed on your body? It will not make you a better person. If you imagine that it would make you feel better about yourself, you may have issues about your self-image that no tattoo will solve. It's worth asking tough questions like these before making a choice as a young person that you will carry with you for the rest of your life.
